The project was delivered as Urgent Reactive Works as the culvert had a likelihood of failure and a criticality rating of 5.

This meant the culvert needed to be renewed within a year of the inspection. Babbage was engaged by Auckland Council to design the renewal of the dilapidated culvert and also undertook field investigations comprising topographic surveys, geotechnical investigations, land contamination, and ecological and arboricultural assessments.

Challenges

The key challenges, other than a tight timeline, that we needed to overcome with our design comprised, difficult access to the sites of the inlet and the outlet, and the new culvert needing to be constructed under more than 6m of uncontrolled fill material in close proximity to the house. We overcame the challenges that site conditions posed by using the conventional pipe jacking method and designing an inlet/outlet with a combination of in-site and ‘off-the-shelf’ components for easy transportation and installation.
