North Harbour Hospital Extension

The hospital extension is a multi-stage development. The development included:
A carpark extension – which requires a major retaining wall structure to be constructed.
A single-storey in-patient ward.
A three-storey building to house the administration department, training facility, consultant spaces and the oncology department with radiotherapy equipment.
A three-storey building to house the in-patient facility with basement carpark space.
This new development is on a steep slope next to an existing hospital.
The design challenges were:
Noise and vibration control to minimise the impacts on the existing hospital facility.
Underpinning the existing hospital building to enable the deep excavation.
The design and support of the x-ray bunker rooms with steel plates and high density concrete on a weak foundation.
Allowing flexibility of future use of the building for future technology development.
